Companion to St. Asaph 1898

The Companion to St. Asaph book 1898 by Joseph Henry Austen (Author) PUBLISHED BY D. Hughes, Victoria Printing Works, St. Asaph, 1898.

‘Companion’ book that the original is in was published in 1898 with the photos taken by Dafydd Hughes who had a printing shop on the High St (where Clive’s used to be) and lived at 2 Ruby Terrace. Most of his many photos were taken in the period 1895-1905.

You can see a display case of Hughes’s photographs outside his house. Ruby Terrace was new(ish) at the time the photo was taken. In about 1980 about 60-80 of his glass negatives by then then occupants of No.2, had been in the cellar since Hughes’s time. Many were water-damaged from the periodic flooding of the cellars that used to occur.

Before Ruby Terrace was built Dafydd Hughes lived in a cottage called Southend at the bottom of Red Hill (long since disappeared).
